A Practical Guide to Thesis Length

First check what thesis means in your department

Before you trust any number, identify what your university means by thesis. The label changes across academic systems.

In the United States, a thesis usually refers to the final research project for a master’s degree. A doctoral candidate normally writes a dissertation. A US student asking how long a thesis is may therefore need a figure closer to 15,000 to 30,000 words than 80,000.

The broad pattern is reversed in the United Kingdom and at many European universities. A master’s student writes a dissertation, while a doctoral candidate submits a thesis. European institutions do not use these terms consistently, however. Master’s thesis appears frequently in Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and international programs taught in English.

Australia and New Zealand generally use thesis for a research master’s degree and a doctorate. Canada mixes US and British conventions.

Your department’s handbook settles the issue. Check the degree level, stated word limit, permitted variation, and definition of included material. If the handbook gives a page limit rather than words, ask whether that total includes references and appendices.

As a quick starting point, a master’s project is often 10,000 to 40,000 words. A doctoral thesis or dissertation is commonly 70,000 to 100,000 words. Both ranges can change sharply by subject and thesis format.

Thesis word counts by level and country

The ranges below are useful for planning, but they are not universal regulations. A university may set a lower maximum, require permission above a certain length, or measure the document in pages.

Program type matters as much as location. A taught master’s degree may end with a 10,000-word dissertation completed in one semester. A research master’s degree can require 30,000 to 50,000 words because it includes a larger study and a more detailed account of the methods.

US institutions sometimes specify pages instead. At roughly 250 to 300 words per double-spaced page, 20,000 words occupy about 67 to 80 pages of main text. A 75,000-word doctoral document occupies about 250 to 300 pages before figures, references, and appendices are considered.

Treat page conversions cautiously. A mathematics page with several displayed equations may hold fewer than 150 words, while a history page dominated by prose and footnotes can hold far more.

How to split the words between chapters

A word limit becomes manageable once each chapter has a working allowance. The correct split depends on your research design, but allocating every word before drafting prevents a 7,000-word literature review from consuming half of a 15,000-word project.

Worked example for a 20,000-word master’s thesis

Suppose you are writing an empirical social science thesis with six main chapters. One workable allocation looks like this.

The introduction should establish the research problem, question, scope, and chapter plan without reproducing the whole literature review. Two thousand words is enough for those tasks in a 20,000-word project.

The literature review receives 5,000 words because it must establish the scholarly context and the gap addressed by the study. The methodology needs less space if you used a standard survey or interview design. An unusual experimental method may need a larger allowance.

Results and discussion can be separate chapters or combined. Quantitative work often benefits from a distinct results chapter, while a qualitative thesis may organize several analytical chapters around themes. If you combine results and discussion, the example gives that chapter 9,000 words.

Keep a small reserve during drafting. For a 20,000-word limit, plan chapters totaling about 18,500 to 19,000 words. The remaining allowance can absorb transitions, clarifications requested by your supervisor, and a longer discussion of an unexpected finding.

What counts toward the thesis word limit

Universities do not all run the same counting rule. Two documents with identical main chapters may produce different official totals because one institution counts footnotes and the other excludes them.

Do not rely on the count displayed by your word processor until you have checked the regulations. Microsoft Word may count footnotes, text boxes, and table cells differently depending on the command used. Some universities require you to state the official word count on the title page and explain any exclusions.

Appendices are not a free extension of the argument. They are intended for supporting material such as questionnaires, detailed calculations, interview schedules, or supplementary data. An examiner should be able to follow your main argument without reading fifty pages of material placed outside the limit.

Limits may include an allowed margin. A department might set 15,000 words with a 10 percent tolerance, giving an effective ceiling of 16,500. Another might treat 15,000 as an absolute maximum and apply a penalty from the next word onward. Record the exact rule before setting chapter targets.

How thesis length changes by discipline

Evidence is presented differently across fields. A 45,000-word mathematics thesis can represent as much research as a 90,000-word history thesis because proofs, notation, and equations carry information that a historian presents through extended prose.

Master’s projects show the same pattern on a smaller scale. An applied computing thesis might contain 12,000 words plus software documentation. A history dissertation in the same university could require 20,000 words with extensive footnotes.

Format creates another difference. A traditional monograph thesis is written as one connected book. A manuscript-based thesis contains several journal papers with an introduction and synthesis chapter. Repeated methods may be shortened in the paper-based format, though universities often require linking sections that explain how the papers form one research contribution.

Ask your supervisor for two or three accepted theses from your own program. Their chapter lengths, use of figures, and level of methodological detail provide a better model than an average drawn from unrelated subjects.

How long thesis writing takes

Research, drafting, and revision overlap, so word count alone cannot predict the schedule. Producing 20,000 rough words may take six weeks. Turning them into a coherent thesis with checked sources, accurate tables, and supervisor revisions may take another two months.

A realistic 16-week plan for a 20,000-word master’s thesis could use the first two weeks to confirm the question and chapter structure. Weeks 3 to 6 cover focused reading, notes, and any remaining data preparation. Drafting takes place during weeks 7 to 12. Weeks 13 and 14 are reserved for structural revision, while the final two weeks cover references, formatting, proofreading, and submission checks.

Daily word targets need to account for research. Four hundred usable words per day produces 20,000 words in fifty writing days. Those words will still need revision. A target of 800 words may work for a results section based on completed analysis, but it is less realistic when every paragraph requires archival research or several new sources.
